1. What is Halvah?
Halvah is a natural snack that many people say
was invented thousands of years ago. It is safe
to say that most people whose families come
from the Mediterranean or Eastern Europe and
most places in between are familiar with halvah
of one form or another. Halvah is made from
milled sesame seeds (tahina), egg whites, and
usually 50-60% granulated sugar. It is a delicious
treat that many people associate with their
childhood. Some traditions sweeten halvah with
honey and some put fruit in it as well. Camel
brand halvah is offered in 6 different formats
which can be viewed HERE.
2. What is the difference between regular
halvah and natural halvah?
Regular halvah (which Noble Foods has been manufacturing
under the Camel brand for almost 100 years)
is made with 50-60% granulated sugar as well
as hydrogenated oils to control oil migration.
Our natural halvah contains absolutely NO granulated
sugars and has not hydrogenated oils or trans
fats.
3. What do you sweeten your halvah with
if there is no sugar? We sweeten our
halvah with malted barly corn syrup.
4. What is Malted Barley Corn Syrup?
A natural sweetener made from a filtered, evaporated
mash of ground corn and sprouted barley. Found
in health-food stores, malt syrup has an earthy,
full-bodied flavor and is 75 to 80 percent as
sweet as honey.
5.
Why does the natural halvah seem to be drier
than the halvah that I’m used to?
Because our natural Halvah contains absolutely
no granulated sugar, the consistency of it may
seem more "flaky" than regular Halvah.
This is normal. It will not have the same consistency
as regular Halvah in that the latter is mostly
sugar and dissolves on your tongue. However,
the Halvah flavors that have more chocolate
in them tend to be less "flaky" as
they have a higher moisture content while still
containing no granulated sugar.
6. Is Halvah Fattening?
Halvah is made primarily from milled sesame
seeds (tahina) which are naturally high in both
calories and poly and mono unsaturated fats
– which are very healthy fats for you.
7. Can I freeze Halvah?
Halvah does not survive the freezing process
very well. While many people find that it does
taste better cold, please make sure it does
not freeze.
8. Where can I find your halvah?
You can find our halvah in most natural food
stores in your area. If, for whatever reason,
your local natural food store does not carry
our product, you can purchase it here.
9. Why is there oil leaking from the
halvah?
Because we do not use any hydrogenated oils
in our halvah – which are used to emulsify
the naturally occurring sesame oils in the bar
– under certain conditions the sesame
oil can sometimes migrate to the top of the
bar and then leach out of the packaging through
microscopic holes in the seal. If this happens,
simply return the bar to the store that you
purchased it from and they will refund your
money.
10. Did you change your packaging?
Yes, we did just change our packaging. A picture
of our old packaging can be found HERE.
11. Can I buy your halvah directly?
Unfortunately, we are not set up to sell to
consumers directly but you can purchase our
halvah on-line HERE.
12. What happened to your Carob Coated
Halvah?
Due to consumer feedback, we have discontinued
the use of carob in our coatings and have moved
over the last few years to a pure chocolate
coating that we sweeten with molasses powder.
13. Who should I contact if I still
have some questions about your halvah?
You can e-mail info@noblefoods.com
